Kovalev vs Shabranskyy… Sergey Kovalev returned the ring last night after two successive losses to Andre Ward, he returned to fight Vyacheslav Shabranskyy for the WBO World Title. This was a big fight for Kovalev as it could see him rise back to the top of the division after the retirement of Ward earlier this year.
The first round was explosive and Kovalev dominated. Kovalev scored the first knockdown of the fight when he landed a right hook around 1 minute and 45 seconds into the bout. Shabranskyy rose back to his feet and did throw a few shots back but nothing that worried Kovalev. Krusher scored another knockdown before the end of the first when he landed a heavy right, then a left which wobbled Shabranskyy which Kovalev followed up with some heavy shots which knocked down the Ukrainian. He once again got back to his feet and managed to see out the first round. Kovalev dominated round two and knocked down his opponent after around 2 minutes in round 2 landing a flurry of heavy shots. Shabranskyy got up once more but he was hurt. Krusher then landed a powerful right hand which buckled the legs of Shabranskyy and after some more dangerous shots landing, the ref stopped the fight after 2 and half minutes into round two. Shabranskyy wasn’t a match for Kovalev, who is? Who should he fight next?
The now, WBO World Light-Heavyweight champion, has multiple options for his next fight. He could face another world champion and unify a couple of the belts in the division which I think is most likely. There is the IBF champion Arter Beterbiev, the WBA champion Dmitry Bivol and there is the WBC champion in Adonis Stevenson. I think the fight with Adonis Stevenson or Beterbiev would be a good move for Krusher as it would be a big fight and would bring in a lot of fans who would watch the bout.
